Nestled on the shore of the Wicomico River, the village of Whitehaven is about 25 minutes outside Salisbury, Maryland. Other Eastern Shore attractions such as Ocean City, Berlin - Voted Coolest Small Town in the United States (Budget Travel), See ponies at Assateague, Chincoteague Islands, Princess Anne, Cambridge, Catch a boat in Crisfield to visit Smith and Tangier Islands.

Nearly thirteen years ago, the 19th century Whitehaven Hotel was saved from the wrecking ball through the cooperative efforts of local residents, the Maryland Historic trust and by those captivated by its charming location in a riverfront Eastern Shore village at the Whitehaven ferry, minutes from the Chesapeake Bay.

The Hotel, now one of the last of its kind, provided lodging for travelers crossing the Wicomico by horse to Quantico, Salisbury and Princess Anne and by steamship to ports as far as Baltimore.

We welcome you to visit the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland!

All hotel rooms have private baths, two have access to the second floor screened porch and two have working fireplaces.

The delightful local church features intricate interior woodwork, crafted by ship carpenters, and is available for special services upon request

The Hotel's two dining rooms and parlor can accommodate a maximum of 50 guests. If weather permits a tented reception, a slightly larger event is possible. The Whitehaven Hotel and Whitehaven B&B (under separate management) offer a total of 8 rooms, many waterfront rooms, for overnight guests and additional lodging is available nearby. . Kayaks and bikes provided

The Whitehaven Historical Ferry is outside our front door.

Events and Activities

  • The Seagull Century: Mega bike ride/race starts in Salisbury and winds through forests and countryside. Requires advance reservations - October.
  • Deal Island Labor Day Races & Land Festival: Skipjack races (best seen by boat) and workboat docking contest (see it from land, eat fried food and stay well out of the way -- these guys are crazy)
  • Chincoteague Pony Swim & Auction: Favorite of children and romantic adults but watch out, you may end up with a pony in your yard! Last Wednesday and Thursday in July. Princess Anne Days. Tour of historical houses and mansions and locals dressing up in period costumes - July 30-31, 2003.
  • Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge: On the way to Whitehaven from Baltimore/Washington outside of Cambridge off Route 50, this is a great place to see osprey, bald eagles, many types of ducks and geese, by car or kayak!
  • Family history in the area? Try the Maryland Room at Salisbury's public library, the Nabb Center and Handley's Genealogy.
  • Marine facilities are available across the street in the Whitehaven Marina and the best all-you-can-eat seafood on the Shore is available at The Red Roost just three miles away
