Nebraska State and Visitor Information

Nebraska lies in the north-central region of the United States, in the western part of the Great Plains.  It is bounded on the north by South Dakota, on the west by Wyoming and Colorado, and on the south by Kansas.  On the east the Missouri River separates Nebraska from Missouri and Iowa.  The territory of Nebraska became a state on March 1, 1867. It was decided that the state should be named after the largest river in the area. That particular river had been given two names. The white settlers had named it the Platte River, which is what it is known as today. An Oto Indian tribe living in the area called the river Nebraska, which means "flat water."   Nebraska's largest city is Omaha, and Lincoln is home to the University of Nebraska.

There’s plenty to discover in Northeast Nebraska. You can enjoy the outdoors at Lewis and Clark Lake… take a scenic train ride in Fremont… see Johnny Carson’s television memorabilia in his hometown of Norfolk… observe 1820s military life at Fort Atkinson… follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark along the Missouri River. And that’s only the beginning.  Northeast Nebraska has long been known for its excellent hunting and fishing.  You can make your stay in Nebraska a memorable one by staying at one of the state's bed and breakfasts, country inns, historic hotels, farm and ranch homestay B&Bs, and urban inns.  You can learn so much about the state from the resident innkeepers.
