Unfettered by modern pressures, guests keep coming back again and again, to experience the tranquility and charm, and the locale and culture. With the draw of the beaches, the activities available on the Cape, and the Hotel's extensive calendar of concerts, workshops, events and exhibits, The Chalfonte is a perfect "home base" for you, our guest.

Built in the nineteenth century, the Chalfonte offers "the view from yesterday" — genteel Southern-style hospitality, ornate gingerbread verandas lined with comfortable rocking chairs and a constant sea breeze to rejuvenate and refresh.

Her wrap-around verandas, Italianate cupola and size give the Chalfonte a distinctive profile. The hotel now occupies nearly an entire city block.

Visitors cannot resist snapping pictures from every imaginable angle, earning the hotel the moniker of "most photographed building in Cape May." The Hotel lends itself to unusual photo ops and has stopped many visitors in their tracks, sending them reaching for camera or sketchbook.

The hotel was built in 1876 by Colonel Henry Sawyer, a local Civil War Hero. Originally planned as a boarding house, Sawyer’s Chalfonte underwent most of its expansion between 1876 and 1909. The present footprint is much as it was in 1909.

The Hotel has had three owners — Henry Sawyer, The Satterfield family of Richmond, Virginia, and present and current stewards, Anne LeDuc and Judy Bartella, who have owned and operated the hotel for 30 years.

Accommodations are in the main building and in three cottages on the property.  Simplicity is the keyword that best describes the guest rooms.

All rooms are furnished with beautiful marble-topped dressers and washstands, ceiling fans, and an outer louvered door to welcome the fresh ocean breezes.

The Chalfonte room rates range from $105 to $265 plus tax and gratuities, and are based on Double Occupancy.  Rooms do not have air-conditioning, televisions or telephones, making for a lovely distraction-free vacation!

We also have a cottage available for rent by the week (Saturday to Saturday) that may suit your needs ast well!
