The name "Black Duck" occupies a memorable place in Newport history. It was the name of the notorious 1929 "Rum Runner" vessel that smuggled liquor into Newport Harbor. It was the bane of the US Coast Guard, but much admired by the local population.

Finally, one foggy night, the "Black Duck" was captured by the Coast Guard who opened fire on the boat and killed three of the four crewmen. This action caused such a furor locally that Coast Guardsmen were attacked on the streets of Newport by outraged local citizens, and demands for action against the Coast Guard reached the desk of the President of the United States.

The one surviving smuggler, considered a "Robin Hood" by many local citizens, was so well linked that when the case finally came to trial he was acquitted.
